What is Intermittent Fasting?

When I speak of Fasting, I mean a set time where you do not eat and where your body is free from food and free to digest and cleanse itself. One of the most intensive things the body does each day is digest our food. So it needs a rest. Just like our physical body and mind need a rest each day to rejuvenate and come back to balance. This is why intermittent fasting is a very helpful daily practice.

Intermittent fasting is restricting the timing of food intake to certain hours of the day (typically within an 8- to 12-hour time window that begins with the first food or non-water drink) without an overt attempt to reduce caloric intake. 1

Fasting is also an ancient tradition, long believed to be vital to humans’ physical and spiritual health. Practiced for millennia by various cultures and religious groups, fasting is now widely appreciated for its beneficial effects on human metabolism, health span and overall well-being.

Why do it?

There are many benefits to Intermittent Fasting. Here are a few of them:

1. Easy implementation

Its one thing to tell some one what to eat and how. Its another thing to tell them WHEN to eat it. By focusing only on the time when you eat food, you are not restricting yourself, thus you will not feel deprived or have cravings. You are not saying “don’t eat this”, you can eat as normal during the day, just stop eating from 8pm to 8am. Thus when you focus on timing versus WHAT to eat, its far easier to follow through with it and see results.  More emphasis on what to eat can be focused on after when to eat it mastered.

2. Weight Loss

I have come to learn ( from personal experience and research) that having the goal of losing weight often puts us in a cycle of sabotage. We say we cannot eat certain things, feel deprived, and then eat more than we should or not at all. Yet when we focus on intermittent fasting for health, for longevity, for digestive healing, for the soul and mind care… the weight then allowed to fall off naturally as a result of higher goals  and without the need to try so hard. According to Mission.Org , it says: “This all plays on our insulin levels. After you eat something, your insulin levels rise. Insulin is a hormone that’s made by the pancreas, which is used to regulate your blood sugar. It’s job is to take up the glucose that comes from sugar or carbs and either use it for energy or store it for later use. When you don’t eat for an extended period of time, say 8 to 12 hours or so, you enter a fasted state, your insulin levels are low, and your body starts to use fat as it’s source of energy.” And because of this, you will lose weight- naturally.

3. Gain Muscle Mass

You will be eating the same calories and the same protein as before, you are just changing the timing of nutrient delivery. By doing so you are giving rest to your digestive track, and instead of breaking down food in the evening or while sleeping, you are enabling your body to re-purpose the energy and put it towards muscle growth and repair.

How is Fasting a Sacred Mindfulness Practice?

The mantra we will be reciting during our fast is “Thoughts are food for my mind”. When we fast, we can fully focus on and be present with the thoughts we think. As we become aware of the thoughts we think, we can actively seek higher thoughts and enable our lower order thoughts to be replaced by them. These higher order thoughts feed our souls, fuel our bodies and heal our minds.

Mindfulness is a natural occurrence when we are placed in a position of having to become conscious about what time we ingest our food. If we have decided to fast between 8pm and 8am for example…when 10pm rolls around and you want to eat, it takes ample mindfulness and willingness to decide otherwise.

Along with mindfulness and willingness,
here are 4 more mindset & spiritual benefits you will encounter and strengthen while you fast.

1. Disciple

Discipline is the main factor that you will need in order to achieve and maintain health and success. When you are disciplined in the timing of when you eat, and disciplined in the thoughts you think during that time, you are activating the energy that is needed to enhance your life.  This is when you realize you have enough energy and faith to take your hands “off the wheel” so to speak, and give your body and mind rest to be cleansed and guided to consistent healthy living.

2. Patience

It’s often stated that patience is a virtue. When you’re able to develop patience, you can endure and overcome any difficult situation with the knowledge that you’ll make it through to the other side. Patience is required to see the results we seek. If we are not patient, we often give up too soon and lose out on the results of our efforts.

3. Clarity

In many cases, people have shared the positive effect that fasting has on their mental clarity. There are so many people who walk around with stress, worry and anxiety. When you’re able to get rid of those factors,  you can focus in a different way. This is mainly because you don’t have the fog associated with mental angst. Your mind is clear and you are able to let go of anything that is unwanted. You are also able to ride above the busy thoughts, and view life from a new perspective. This new perspective brings clarity, and breeds calm understanding.

4. Rest

There are times when people are constantly consuming and they don’t get a chance to detox. When you fast, it allows your body the space it needs to cleanse itself. When your body rests, you can also allows your mind to rest. As you allow your mind to rest, YOU feel at rest. This is important for resetting your system to function most optimally and healthfully.

You can then “rest in God” or “rest in Love” to are far greater degree then if you were distracted (even subconsciously) by the digesting of your body or hustle bustle of your mind.

“The best of all medicines is resting and fasting” – Benjamin Franklin
